Clara Waddell of Easley participates in National Concrete Canoe Competition at Clemson University

2015 Jun 30

Clara Waddell of Easley and the Clemson University Concrete Canoe Team (3CT) competed in the 2015 National Concrete Canoe Competition, which was hosted at Clemson this year.

Waddell, who is majoring in Industrial Engineering, and the team won first place in the Final Product category for their canoe and placed fifth in the overall competition. Twenty-two teams representing universities from the U.S. and Canada competed. (See the results here: http://www.asce.org/concrete-canoe-results/)

The Clemson team won the Final Product award based on the workmanship and aesthetic qualities of its canoe and a display table that featured a cutaway section of the craft to demonstrate the construction process.

Its fifth-place finish was based on the scores of the final product, it's third-place design paper, an oral presentation and a race among the canoes on Hartwell Lake, which adjoins the campus.

The competition, held by the American Society of Civil Engineers, brings together engineering students from across the country to compete with the canoes they built throughout the course of the past academic year.
