Rachel Ann Brewer of Boiling Springs is using spring break from Clemson University to help with Hurricane Sandy relief in Tom's River, N.J.

Brewer, a junior majoring in biological sciences, is spending March 18-22 in Clemson's Alternative Break Program.

The Alternative Break Program is an organization that provides students the chance to exchange their fall and spring break vacations for unforgettable service-learning experiences.

Clemson faculty and staff members will travel with the group acting as learning-partners to take advantage of teachable moments.

Some of the specific projects the students might work on include removing sand from buildings and homes, rebuilding dunes, improving trails and parks, working in after-school programs, painting projects and community food banks.
